Thank you! I do so love your work and they way you write about your process. I don't often write about my process and it is something to aspire to!

Brian, it's so interesting to be able to see the patience and attention to detail that went into the making of this milestone poem. I can't think of a better way to celebrate turning 40. It's so much more meaningful than those black balloons and tombstone-themed 40th slapstick parties. Thank you for having the courage to show your notebook. It takes humility to offer something like this--something truly helpful--a teaching tool for aspiring poets. Happy Birthday and may the truest words keep finding their place in your poetry and in your life.

Wow, so much detail in this reflection. It's incredible to see your notebook. Thank you for sharing that, it adds a lot to this post. The notes on the repetition of words and specific sounds were enlightening. It makes me ponder on wanting to post about deconstructing and reconstructing sentences in fiction when editing.

Would have loved to have been there at the party (happy birthday) to celebrate in this manner. What a lovely thing to do.

I had a very intimate gathering for my 40th this year, just a small group of friends for a special dinner in the city. It was the perfect way to celebrate. No poetry, sadly, but my wife did write a very amusing and touching speech.

I think it would very interesting to read about constructing fiction...something I’ve never done!

It makes me happy when people celebrate in a way that feels right to them. I’m glad that happened for your 40th!
